The Orthodox Christian Church has existed for two millennia, tracing its history back to that first apostolic community gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost.
Our Faith
As an Orthodox community our purpose is to know God and worship him together—by participating in the divine services and receiving the sacraments; through studying the Holy Scriptures and writings of the saints; in proclaiming the Gospel of his eternal Son, Jesus Christ; and by sharing fellowship with one another as fellow pilgrims on the road to salvation. We believe that Christianity is a way of life, not merely a collection of doctrines. Each of us is called to be sanctified by God’s holy presence as we learn to surrender ourselves to his perfect will.
Our Parish
Christ the Saviour Orthodox Cathedral is a parish of the Orthodox Church in America, united in faith with millions Orthodox Christians throughout the world. We are a multi-cultural community, and all our services are in English. We offer numerous opportunities for education including Bible study, adult catechism for new members, and Sunday School for the youth. And we regularly organize charitable functions to assist the needy.
Our parish was founded in 1962 by Fr. George Gladky, originally worshiping at a location on NW 99 Street in Miami. The church was elevated to the status of “cathedral” in 1978 with the establishment of the Diocese of the South under Archbishop Dimitri (Royster). With the Cathedral as his base of operations, Fr. George founded many Orthodox missions in Florida (and beyond) until his death in 1989. After 1992, his successor, Fr. Philip Reese, began the process of building a new and more elaborate complex in Miami Lakes consisting of a temple, fellowship hall, book center, classrooms, and offices. He was joined in this effort in 2011 by Fr. Joseph Lucas, who was appointed Rector of the Cathedral after Fr. Philip’s retirement in 2018 with the consecration of the site by Archbishop Alexander (Golitzin).
