As Orthodox Christians we do not see iconography as mere church decor but, rather, as a sacred and preeminent reminder of God’s kingdom which surrounds us at all times. As we contemplate various events and saints throughout the history of the Church, we are reminded that the path of holiness is extended to us as well, for which icons inspire authentic Christian living. We rightly remember, honor and venerate them and, in turn, are directed to Paul’s exhortation: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor 3:18).
