From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear
Parishioners and Friends,
September 1st is the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year. The Saint remembered on this day is St. Simeon the Stylite, a monk of the 6th century who lived on a pillar-like crag in the desert wilderness outside of Antioch. His lifestyle was harshly ascetical, and to many very peculiar and extreme. Still, his faithfulness and preaching in the context of his unusually strict life, drew many to him as a source of inspiration and profound religious teaching.
You may ask, “Why is such an unusual character placed before us for our attention at the New Year?”
The answer is that his extreme and funny way of life is a reminder to us that in order to properly be a Christian, we must become in some sense – a radical Christ calls us to be his disciples. He calls us to take up our cross and follow him. He teaches us that we are to love him more than father or mother, children or lands. He said that if the world persecuted him, we too will be persecuted.
We are called then to be radically Christian in our attempt to love and follow Christ and to live his Gospel teachings. This is why St. Simeon, the true radical, is remembered at the Church New Year.
May our remembrance and consideration of this Saint helps us to be better focused on Christ as we begin a new year of a new liturgical cycle.
In Christ,
Fr Philip Reese
